On April 24 and 25, Biophysical Society members Leslie Satin, University of Michigan, Tara Schwetz, Vanderbilt University, and Suhrud Rajguru, University of Miami joined with more than 200 scientists, engineers and business leaders who made visits on Capitol Hill as part of the sixteenth “Science-Engineering-Technology-Congressional Visits Day (CVD).”  This annual event is sponsored by the Science-Engineering-Technology Work Group, which the Biophysical Society participates in.  The purpose of the visits was to express support for sustained and predictable funding federal for research and to discuss the important economic impacts on our economy of such programs.  The participants also had the opportunity to learn about the federal budget for science agencies, the appropriations process, and what might happen to the federal budget if Congress cannot come to an agreement on how to trim federal spending before the end of the year from a panel of speakers that included representatives from the White House, Capitol Hill, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. [caption id="attachment_1112" align="alignleft" width="640"] Suhurud Rajguru, Tara Schwetz, and Les Satin on Capitol Hill[/caption] he BPS team of Satin, Schwetz, and Rajguru, along with BPS staff member Ellen Weiss, met with Congressman Jim Cooper (D-TN) and Congressman Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), as well as staff in the offices of  Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Senator Bob Corker (R-TN), Senator Carl Levin (D-MI), Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL), Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Congressman Jon Dingell (D-MI).  Overall, the CVD participants visited with 700 Congressional staff members and Congressmen, sharing the importance of scientific research.
