How was everyone’s biophysics-filled weekend?
The weather on Sunday, as I recall, was spectacular. I grew up in Dallas where the summers are scorching and the winters are bitter and icy and, let me tell you, NorCal weather is as close to a divine experience as I have ever come across in my life.
My labmates and I managed to secure a nice pocket time for lunch between the mid-morning platform talks and the poster session and, given that the weather was so beautiful, we decided to have lunch somewhere extra nice.
Now, I’m sure the Metreon Mall is a popular lunch spot for many BPS attendees – the variety is great and it’s right by the convention center – but if you have some extra time on your hands and want to enjoy a nice walk through the city, I definitely suggest checking out the Ferry Building.
Located at the foot of Market Street, it is impossible to miss this beautiful Beaux-Arts building and its gorgeous Spanish-style clock tower. Built in the late 19th century, and later renovated in 2003, the San Francisco Ferry Building serves as a ferry terminal and a marketplace in one.
You can find a huge variety of deliciousness here. Everything from small cafes and eateries perfect for lunch, to farm fresh produce, wine, cheese, pastries, and ice-cream. I had tofu & lemongrass with rice and a taro boba from Out the Door, an awesome little Vietnamese takeout place.
Lunch in the sun by the waterfront turned out to be the perfect rejuvenating experience after an intense morning and we returned to the Moscone Center, ready to take on the poster session. If you have time, do check out the San Francisco Ferry Building! Walking directions from the Moscone Center (~1.1 miles/22 min):
- Walk along Howard St, towards 3rd St.
- Turn left on 3rd St
- Turn right on Market St and keep walking straight until you see the Ferry Building
