Steven G. Boxer to Receive Biophysical Society’s 2024 Founders Award

ROCKVILLE, MD – The Biophysical Society is pleased to announce that Steven G. Boxer, PhD, of Stanford University, will receive the Society’s 2024 Founders Award. Boxer will be honored at the Society’s 68th Annual Meeting, being held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from February 10-14, 2024.

Boxer is being honored for his insightful and far-reaching contributions to biophysics using his invention of vibrational Stark spectroscopy coupled with mutational analysis and structure, to provide deep mechanistic understandings of photosynthetic reaction centers, fluorescent proteins, vesicle membrane fusion in self-assembling bilayers, as well as electric field effects in enzymes and proteins.

“The Founders Award allows us to call attention to outstanding achievements in biophysics that are now accepted and used by others,” said BPS President Taekjip Ha of Harvard Medical School. “Steve’s work with vibrational Stark spectroscopy has not only made groundbreaking advancements in biophysics, but also expanded the use of vibrational probes for mapping electric fields in proteins a field of its own. We are honored to bestow the 2024 Founders Award on him.”

About the Award - The Founders Award is given to scientists for outstanding achievement in any area of biophysics, often reflected in the acceptance of and use by others in the field, either promptly or over a period of years.
