Biophysics Seminar: Relaxing Under Stress: Developing a Generalized Material Model for Highly Compressed Lipid Monolayers

3/22/2024
Minnesota, United States
Virtual

Anna Gaffney, University of Chicago graduate student, will share a seminar with Augsburg University undergraduates.

ABSTRACT: Lipid monolayers are membranes that self-assemble at the air-water interface and are found biologically in the ears, eyes, and lungs. Studying their responses to mechanical forces and stress can supply information to both the lipid and thin sheet fields. Mechanically, highly compressed lipid monolayers can be represented as elastic sheets. In this sense, at some critical stress, these sheets must undergo instabilities. Some do this through out-of-plane collapse, while others relax in-plane. This in-plane relaxation is experimentally observed with fluorescence microscopy (FM) and is characterized as reorganization of condensed domainswithin a softer matrix. These different modes of instability are accessible by tuning lipid monolayer softness, inspiring our search for a generalized material model with similar tunability. The elastic models that are currently used to describe out-of-plane collapse have been unsuccessful in capturing in-plane relaxation. We hypothesize this is because the matrix is relaxing through strain localization in the form of shear banding. Utilizing computational modeling at the continuum mechanics scale, we have developed a material model that can tune for shear banding. Simulation results from models that incorporate FM-derived condensed domain morphology show that if we trigger shear banding in the matrix around domains, the domains can reorganize and reproduce the experimental in-plane relaxation morphology. Our findings expand understanding of lipid monolayer mechanical response and can be applied to broader research in other thin sheet systems as well.

Event starts at 11:20 AM CST and ends at 12:00 PM CST.

BPS Membrane Transport Subgroup - Biophysics Bridge Builders: Connecting Students & Scholars

3/22/2024
Western University of Health Sciences
California, United States

The Biophysics Bridge Builders: Connecting Students & Scholars event, held during Biophysics Week 2024, exemplifies the mission of fostering meaningful interactions among biophysicists, researchers, students, and enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. Hosted by the BPS Membrane Transport Subgroup, Dr. Deepak Kumar and Dr. Tharaka Wijerathne under the guidance of Dr. Yun Lyna Luo from Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, CA, this event serves as a vital platform for sharing ideas, discussing research, and building valuable connections that can drive future collaborations and advancements in the field.

Through engaging panel discussions, participants explore emerging trends and innovative techniques in membrane transport biophysics, gaining insights into computational and experimental approaches that shape our understanding of cellular dynamics. These discussions catalyze interdisciplinary collaborations, bridging the gap between students and scholars and fostering a collaborative environment conducive to innovation and progress.

In addition to panel discussions, the event features informal meet-and-greet sessions where participants can forge meaningful connections and exchange ideas. Virtual poster sessions provide researchers with an opportunity to showcase their latest findings, encouraging dialogue and collaboration across diverse research endeavors.

Embracing diversity and inclusion, the event ensures accessibility through live closed captions and recorded sessions, welcoming participants from all backgrounds and time zones. By encouraging scientists from underrepresented groups to participate as panelists, the event amplifies diverse perspectives and promotes a more inclusive biophysics community.

Biophysics Bridge Builders: Connecting Students & Scholars embodies the spirit of Biophysics Week 2024 by serving as a conduit for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and networking. Join us in building bridges and cultivating connections that drive impactful advancements in the field of biophysics.
